The 2017 GENE2SKIN Winter School
The 2017 GENE2SKIN Winter School is being organized in the scope of the European Horizon 2020 Twinning project GENE2SKIN: Roadmap for advanced genetic engineering-based skin therapies (http://gene2skin.eu). It aims at providing young researchers a learning experience regarding the molecular mechanisms involved in skin physiology and pahtophysiology and potential gene-based therapies for the treatment of several skin diseases.

The Term Stem 2017
TERM STEM comprises a series of annual conferences organized by 3B’s Research Group and supported by the Northern Portugal Regional Development Authority. This Conference Series intends to provide and establish an international forum for the presentation and discussion of frontier research in the fields of Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells. We are very excited by the program of the 2017 edition of TERMSTEM that will join a strong slate of world scientific leaders to showcase and discuss the latest research on the interplay between biomaterial structures and surfaces, morphogens and stem cells to modulate tissue regeneration. This edition will also feature foundational contributions in the emergent topic of organs on a chip and microfluidic supporting devices and its current industrial perspectives.

FoReCaST 2017
The majority of the in vitro models only involve a single tumour cell population, which represents a small fraction of the tumour development and integrative cell network. Therefore, a new dimension in cancer research has to be developed: the 3D microenvironment. Thus, the FoReCaST project intend to create in vitro 3D cancer study models, which will copycat the complexity and hierarchically organization of natural ECM of tumour cells found in vivo. In this context, 3B’s-UMINHO will strategically use the knowledge gained during the last ~20years in the fields of biomaterials sciences and tissue engineering, and five new complementary research topics are being implemented to consolidate this new research topic within the following topics (Fig.1):

  • RL1 - Metabolic glycoengineering for tumour imaging;
  • RL2 - Bioinformatics;
  • RL3 - Cell engineering;
  • RL4 - Nanotechnologies
  • RL5 - Cell signalling
